[Ferro-Alloys.com] China Iron and Steel Association Executive Chairman Mr He Wenbo disclosed at the 11th China International Steel Congress in Shanghai on May 27 that “China has been executing the largest-ever steel capacity upgrading plan in the global steel history. China will continue with the steel capacity upgrading, replacing 236 million tonnes per year of old steelmaking capacity with 221 million tonnes per year of new capacity during the 14th Five-Year Plan period in 2021-2025.”
This is the continuity of China’s efforts during 13th Five-Year Plan period of 2016-2020 when it completed replacing 86 million tonnes per year of old steelmaking capacity with 80 million tonnes per year
The steel sector contributes around 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions in China, which has pledged to bring its carbon emissions to a peak before 2030. About 620 million tonnes of crude steel capacity were conducting or had finished ultra-low emission upgrades by end-February.
