05 global carbon emission reduction achieved fruitful results, hydrogen energy ironmaking achieved milestone progress
In 2020, the carbon emission reduction targets of global steel and upstream and downstream related industries will be clearer, the pace will be more solid, and the results will be more fruitful.
On August 31, HYBRIT (breakthrough hydrogen energy ironmaking technology), the world's first pilot line of fossil fuel free sponge iron, was put into operation in Lulea, Sweden. HYBRIT project is promoted by HYBRIT Development Co., Ltd. jointly established by SSAB (Swedish steel), LKAB (Swedish mining group, Europe's largest iron ore producer) and Vattenfall (Swedish waterfall power company, one of Europe's largest power producers). SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall plan to build the world's first "fossil fuel free steel manufacturing" value chain. The goal is: to take the lead in realizing fossil fuel free smelting technology in the world by 2026 via HYBRIT technology; to manufacture steel completely according to fossil fuel free process route by 2045.
Comments: Under the new trend of "carbon footprint reduction and carbon emission reduction of iron and steel industry", carbon footprint reduction of iron and steel industry has become the focus. Among them, hydrogen metallurgy technology has become the key of carbon emission reduction recognized by the majority of iron and steel enterprises. Looking at the actions and progress of hydrogen metallurgy technology research in the world, it is not difficult to see that the iron and steel industry has the ability to use hydrogen in the blast furnace within the allowable range of technology. However, if the iron and steel production is completely based on pure hydrogen, it also depends on the research process of electric arc furnace, direct reduction iron (DRI) and other technologies, as well as whether there are sufficient and reasonable prices in the future Green hydrogen resources in China.
